Organization Theory: Modern, Symbolic, and Postmodern Perspectives, 4th Edition
ISBN-13: 978-0198723981
ISBN-10: 0198723989
Author: Mary Jo Hatch (Author)
Organization Theory offers a clear and comprehensive introduction to the study of organizations and organizing processes. Through the unique three-perspective approach, students are challenged to explain, explore, and evaluate organizational theory, drawing on their own experiences as well as the book’s diverse practical examples.
The fourth edition includes a host of new learning features, which examine the practicality of theorizing and encourage students to broaden their intellectual reach. “Theory to Practice” boxes and case studies highlight organizing processes in a range of settings, either through real-life business examples or through exercises that encourage students to apply the theory within their own environment. “Think like a Theorist” and “Exercise Those Perspectives” boxes then encourage students to actively theorize and evaluate, developing essential critical thinking skills and a greater understanding of the complex knowledge produced by organization theorists. By taking theory off the page, students can learn through doing and adopt a reflective stance to the world around them.
Mary Jo Hatch draws on her extensive experience in the field to produce a trusted and accessible introduction to the subject that provides academic depth, engaging pedagogy, and a practical focus.
New to this edition
The fourth edition has been extensively revised and rewritten.
To provide clearer structure to the material presented, numerous new subsections have been added to every chapter.
The addition of learning features will encourage readers to engage with the material in each chapter. These are dedicated to four purposes, indicated by their titles: (1) Case example, (2) From theory to practice, (3) Think like a theorist, and (4) Exercise those perspectives.
The addition of these features ensures separation between presentation of the core concepts, theories, and perspectives of organization theory that comprise the main text, and boxed material for provoking the reader to actively engage with these ideas via discussion questions and suggested exercises.
A new glossary will be found at the end of the book. The terms whose definitions it provides are highlighted in the text. Part III has been reorganized around themes and applications. Two chapters explore
themes that cross between some or all of the concepts introduced in Part II, including power, politics, conflict, cooperation, control, and organizational identity. As a means to demonstrate the application of multiple concepts and theories, an extensive case study of Carlsberg Group has been added, and some of its analysis is offered to demonstrate how complex organizations can be studied through the application of organization theory. This analysis is followed by questions to guide and encourage the reader to apply the thematic material presented in Part III, as well as to continue exploring how all of organization theory applies to the real world of organizations.
Acknowledgements
Many thanks go to Kate Gilks and Antony Hey, editors at Oxford University Press, who at different stages played key roles in seeing the fourth edition of Organization Theory: Modern, Symbolic, and Postmodern Perspectives into existence. Their steadfast guidance and encouragement has been invaluable to me and to this edition of the textbook. Others who have aided and abetted along the way include my husband, Philip Mirvis, who not only cheered me on throughout a long process of revision and rewriting, but also acted as first reader for much of the new material you will find in this edition. His editorial
contributions were supplemented by a keen writer’s ear, and his comments and suggestions added tremendous clarity to many parts of the book. Majken Schultz and Anne-Marie Skov,
my partners in researching Carlsberg Group, made the case study included at the conclusion of this edition possible. Majken, my longtime research partner, has been highly supportive not only in this endeavor, but also through her many contributions to my learning during the extensive research and teaching we have done together over the past 25 years.
Last, but not least, I want to recognize my daughter, Jennifer, and her wife, Amy, two gifted educators who never cease to inspire me with their steadfast devotion to and concern for their students. I hope that the friendship and love I feel for each of these people is reflected on the pages of this book.
