PREFACE TO THE FOURTH EDITION
The challenges and responsibilities of businesses, highlighted in this book’s subtitle, are mirrored in those that confronted me as the author. In a fast-moving business environment, capturing the changes taking place in both businesses and societies is essential for a textbook addressed to business students. At the same time, foundation concepts and background information, presented in a balanced and orderly format are essential in order for readers to make sense of what is happening around them – and what might happen in the future. Writing this fourth edition, I have found that I am more aware than ever of the responsibilities to the reader, not to simply ‘update’ in a superficial sense, but to impart some sense-making overview of current trends in the business environment. Much of the strength of earlier editions lay in their lucid explanations of foundation material. which remain the best basis on which to understand the environmental shifts taking place, along with their impacts on organizations. Hence, foundation concepts are still core to the book. These are interpreted in new contexts and explored in new case studies and thought-provoking themes under the broad headings of social responslb111ty, governance and sustainability In this new edition, the expanding scope of international business is reflected in the wider variety of business contexts that feature in these chapters, along with a wider
perspective on social responsib1Uty, taking in environmental and ethical concerns across geographic boundaries.
