From today’s headlines to your textbook, SOCIETY, ETHICS, AND TECHNOLOGY, Fifth Edition, explores the cutting edge of technological innovation and how these advances represent profound moral dilemmas for society as a whole. You will build a strong foundation in theory and applied ethics as you are challenged to examine critically the social effects of technology in your daily life. This timely anthology, filled with cutting-edge work from prominent scholars and thinkers, focuses on current technological issues and ethical debates. Insightful introductions and focus questions before each piece help put readings in context and to establish frameworks for ethical decision-making. The readings examine the consequences of technological change from a variety of historical, social, and philosophical perspectives. Special coverage of the history of technology focuses on ground-breaking developments, as well as the technological underpinnings of contemporary globalization. New articles examine the impact of contemporary technological advances, such as nanotechnology, artificial intelligence, and social media. In addition, the book explores the future of technology in such areas as human rights, overpopulation, biotechnology, information technology, climate change, and the environment.
Preface
This book aims to provide students with an understanding of the profound role that science and technology play in shaping modern society, as well as the social and environmental issues that arise from technological change. As in earlier editions, our primary goal has been to empower readers to become better-informed “technological citizens,” and to participate in the ongoing conversations concerning the impact of new technologies on the ways we live and work in the twenty-first century. In the few years since the publication of the fourth edition, important conversations have arisen concerning topics such as drone warfare, nanoscale materials, social media, gene patenting, artificial intelligence, robotics, Internet freedom, and alternative energy technologies.
In preparing this fifth edition of Society, Ethics, and Technology, we have endeavored to preserve the selections and features of earlier editions of the text that instructors and students told us were most valuable, while also expanding our coverage of evolving debates concerning the benefits and risks to society of contemporary technologies.
The basic organization of the book remains the same: Sections 1.1 through 1.3 contain readings addressing the history, sociology, and philosophy of technology, with new readings by authors such as James Burke, Arthur Donovan, Andrew Feenberg, and Michael Davis. The second part of the book, Sections 2.1 through 2.6, has been reorganized and expanded in order to address social and ethical issues arising from rapid technological changes in fields such as security and surveillance, nanotechnology, Internet and social media, artificial intelligence and robotics, genetic engineering, and alternative energy. More than half of the readings in the second part are new for the fifth edition and include the work of authors such as Donald Aitken, Stephen Baker, Lester Brown, Nicholas Carr, Francis Fukuyama, Rebecca MacKinnon, and Abigail Tucker.
As in earlier editions, each selected reading has a brief introduction, a list of discussion questions, and a set of keywords. We have updated and revised these pedagogical aids for this edition. We have also included two appendices in this edition:
Appendix A contains a selection of stories in the news that highlight some of the ethical and social issues of contemporary technology. These short readings are also accompanied by questions for discussion and keywords that can be used to search for current news stories on the topic or issue. Suggestions for further reading on each topic are included to assist students in extended research. Appendix B contains
a selection of ethical codes that can be used in discussions about the professional responsibilities of engineers as well as the more general responsibilities of technological citizens in a global society.
This book also has a website that provides several resources to help students and instructors alike. For students, there are case studies and a list of reliable websites on a wide variety of relevant topics. For instructors, there is a protected test bank as well as handouts used by the authors in their own classes. The website may be found by looking up the book at www.cengagebrain.com.
