About the Cover
Wildlife Can Thrive in Constructed Habitats
The peregrine falcon (Falco peregrinus) is a formidable hunter and typically preys on other birds in flight. Today it is found throughout the world but the peregrine experienced substantial decline in its population beginning in the 1940s, due to the widespread use of the pesticide Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane, known commonly as DDT.
Because DDT causes eggshells to thin, many fewer birds successfully hatched and this species as well as others declined. DDT was banned in the United States in 1972 and in other countries in the following.
decades. By the late 1970s the peregrine falcon began to recover and in 1999 it was removed from the endangered species list. Peregrine falcons perch and nest on cliffs and they often hunt from these positions high on the landscape. Human-made structures such as bridges and tall buildings are also suitable peregrine falcon habitat for hunting and nesting. Cities provide excellent habitat for pigeons, which.
are prey for the peregrine falcon. Peregrines are now found in cities throughout the United States.
In 2015, a nesting pair of peregrine falcons occupied the balcony of a twenty-eighth-floor condominium in Chicago, Illinois. The owner set up a webcam and people all over the world began to follow the activity.
of the birds. In 2016, a wildlife photographer from the Netherlands spent weeks photographing the birds and documented the hatching and fledging of four peregrine falcons young. The cover photo is of one of
the adult falcons and the four chicks on the balcony in Chicago.
The story of the peregrine’s comeback is an example of the complexity of environmental science. Yes, humans can disturb natural environments, leading to the decline of a species. Yet human structures, such as bridges and apartment buildings, can also provide habitat for birds such as falcons, and their prey, and create an environment in which they can thrive.
Getting the Most from This Book
Daily life is filled with decisions large and small that affect our environment. From the food we eat, to the cars we drive or choose not to drive, to the chemicals we put into the water, soil, and air. The impact of human activity is wide-ranging and deep. And yet making decisions about the environment is often not easy or straightforward. Is it better for the environment if we purchase a new, energy-efficient hybrid car or should we continue using the older car we already own?
Should we remove a dam that provides electricity for 70,000 homes because it interferes with the migration of salmon? Are there alternatives to fossil fuel for heating our homes?
The purpose of this book is to give you a working knowledge of the big ideas of environmental science and help you to prepare for the AP Environmental Science Exam. The book is designed to provide you
with a strong foundation in the scientific fundamentals, to introduce you to the policy issues and conflicts that emerge in the real world, and to offer you an in-depth exploration of all the topics covered on the
advanced placement exam in environmental science.
Like the first two editions, Friedland and Relyea’s Environmental Science for the AP Course, Third Edition, is organized to closely follow the AP Environmental Science course description. Every item on the College Board’s curriculum framework is covered thoroughly in the text. The textbook offers comprehensive coverage of all required AP course topics and will help you succeed on the exam with many unique features including the following.
