PREFACE
Most of us who introduce students to the field of interpersonal communication search for the “sweet spot” that strikes a balance between academic rigor and user friendliness. The growing use of Interplay suggests that both professors and students have found that this book does a good job of finding that spot connecting scholarship to everyday life and providing tools for understanding and enhancing communication in important relationships.
We hope you agree. In this edition of Interplay, we build on the proven approach that has served students and professors over three decades. The book’s accessible writing style is based on the belief that even complicated ideas can be presented in a straightforward way. A variety of thought-provoking photos, sidebars, and cartoons make the subject more interesting and compelling than text alone can do. In terms of its scholarly grounding, in this edition, we cite more than I ,800 sources, about a third of which are new to this edition. Research and theory aren’t presented for their own sake, but rather to support insights about how the process of interpersonal communication operates in everyday life.
NEW IN THIS EDITION
Although the overall structure of the book will be familiar to long-time users, several changes enhance its usability and keep the content up to date. The three most visible updates involve..
• Expanded and updated coverage of social media: Throughout the book, we address the revolutionary impact of social media on personal relationships. An overview titled “Social Media and Interpersonal
Communication” now appears in Chapter I, where we introduce key terms and concepts. Expanded coverage of social media appears in the body of every chapter and also in sidebars, photos, self- assessments, and activities.
• Expanded and reworked discussions of relational contexts: We have thoroughly reworked coverage of communication in close relationships and moved it to Chapter IO. In addition to expanded treatment of
communication among friends and family, this chapter includes a new section on “Communication in Romantic Relationships” in response to the requests of many readers.
• Contemporary examples from film, television, and popular culture with a corresponding YouTube channel to launch lectures: We have updated almost all of the film and TV examples in the book and added
even more in this edition, along with other examples from today’s world. Video clips for many of these examples and more are now available on a YouTube channel, accessible via the companion website at

We have made many changes to individual chapters to address the latest communication research and changing communication practices. These include the following:
• In Chapter 2, we address the impact of co-cultural factors including ethnicity, gender identity, age, and socioeconomic status on interpersonal communication.
• In Chapter 4, we explain perceptual biases such as the primacy effect, the horns effect, and the fundamental attribution error.
• In Chapter 5, we discuss gender effects on language use (both in person and online).
• In Chapter 7, we introduce new research on listening styles.
• In Chapter 8, we include a new discussion of how facilitative emotions shape relationships.
• In Chapter 9, we devote more coverage to relational maintenance and social support.
• In Chapter 11, we now have invitational communication as an organizing principle for communication climate.
In addition to updates in the text proper, even a quick look at this edition will show that numerous changes in sidebars, boxes, and images help keep the book engaging and current:
• Focus on Research boxes cover new, timely subjects including interpersonal dimensions of tweeting, relational challenges of studying abroad, reflected appraisal in online postings, the negative consequences of fat talk, the different languages of texting and talking, exchanging advice online, cell phones and relational dialectics, and the implicit rules for Facebook friendships.
• Dark Side of Communication sidebars address problems including loneliness and the Internet, online hoaxes, the “Gaslight Effect,” preferential treatment given to attractive people, abusive relationships, and
updated looks at jealousy and cyberbullying.
• Media Clips use both television shows and films to dramatize how communication concepts operate in everyday life. New TV shows include How I Met Your Mother (transactional communication), An Idiot
Abroad (intercultural competence), The Big Bang Theory (emotional intelligence), Scandal (nonverbal deception clues), and Catfish (online impression management). New feature films include Her (social media and intimacy), The Way Way Back (self-concept), Stories We Tell (personal narratives), Our Idiot Brother (family boundaries), Bully (aggression), and The Hunger Games (conflict).
• At Work boxes help readers apply scholarship to their careers. Topics include identity management in the workplace, the effects of swearing on the job, the role of touch in career success, and the value of cultivating social capital. A new box on organizational culture appears in Chapter 2.
• Learning Objectives now correspond to the major sections in each chapter, clarifying what information students need to know and where to find it.
• Assessing Your Communication instruments in every chapter help students understand how they currently communicate and provide a vision for interacting more effectively in important relationships. New
instruments in this edition include measurements for the use of social media, online and offline self-disclosure, empathy, listening styles, and family communication patterns.
• At the end of each chapter, new Check Your Understanding summary points, questions, and prompts are linked to Learning Objectives. They help students evaluate how much they have learned and apply key
concepts to their own lives.
• Activities now emphasize collaborative learning to enhance understanding.
